My '88 300TE had its head redone recently (about 5k mi ago)-the cylinders look as-new. It now burns not a drop of oil-was using a quart every 1,500 mi. before, but then the head gasket started to leak oil into the coolant so I had to bite the bullet.

Do a compression test!
