i agree with brian.

and more specifically he is i believe referring to the cv joints. these can be checked by placing the car where it wll not roll with the tranny in neutral and not park so that there is no tension on the drive train. then you grab the half shafts and push up and down. any looseness is bad. it will slide in and out slightly as a normal function but up and down is not good.

the fix is usually to replace the entire half shaft including the cv joints with a new or rebuilt unit.
