Must confess, I thought the beemer used the same McPherson strut set-up but I now realize I'm not certain.

Mike, if you can't find the right tech help at the bimmer forums and you really need a low cost expert opinion, for the cost of an annual subscription to Roundel, the BMW car club's mag, you get a list of BMW techs who will answer e-mail questions for you. I took advantage of it a few times, worked well, but I'm not currently a member.

$30 to $50 annually, I believe. One hopes you could get the same access online after a subscription.
