Question 126 trans fluid change

Can't find on DIY. The service manual says to remove the cross member to gain access to torque converter drain plug. While I was rotating engine, to line up drain, not an easy thing, when I got close the compression took over and spun too far. Car up on jack stands for manuvering purposes. After three times doing this, as I have to feel for plug while rotating...well, I consulted SM. Anyway, l was wondering if anyone has drained without removing crossmember? It's going to be a mess, as the fluid will run onto a horizontal plane, might try to slide a funnel into container, as long as I don't mind showering in ATF. Otherwise, is said bolt accessible even? New K-1 spring? While I'm here, can it hurt?
