For instance, I was in college for a BA in Music Performance. To require me to take advanced calculus, trigonometry, and other such nonsense (my university didn't, fortunately) would have been a big waste of time, money, and resources. Actually, if you've used any of the recent composing and/or recording tools (Pro-Tools, Reason, Cakewalk, etc.), a good grasp of algebra goes a long way when editing a project...I can spend more time creating and less time figuring out the tool...
