The Taurus came in 1986, and I can't think of any domestic that has made more of an impact in the last 20 years. Maybe the 300 Chrysler, but then that's going full-circle and putting RWD back into a midsize, so there's going to be some hoopla.

Ralph, a 1987 Taurus, had 180k when dad decided I needed a new car-- it was as new.

Mother's 1989 Tempo(affectionately called Woody by the family-- My sis wrecked it and they put a 4x4 on the front bumper supports to embarass her into not futzing with the stereo while in traffic) went quite a few further, to be left on the side of the interstate at 240k miles.

You're making false arguments here-- just because one is good does not mean the other has to be bad.

Congrats on the new car! Have you named him/her yet?
Well the early Taurus was certainly the first jellybean car and got a lot of attention. They got cheaper every year thereafter, I had them for company cars for years. Probably put around 750,000 miles on a laundry list of them, running 65,000 miles or so per year. First one had a 4 cylinder Tempo motor. The single worst car I have every had the displeasure to operate. My company blew countless transmissions in them, etc. Still remember some "dude" at JiffyLube with pink fingernails and eye shadow wandering out with my pan from the transmission showing me the magnet, which looked like a metal chia pet, it could hold no more and the shavings were all over the place, oh well, under 40,000 all highway and cruise control.

Currently my company has punted all Ford Taurus' and replaced with the Accord. Fuel mileage up 7 mpg for the fleet, resale up about $5,000, maintenance zero etc. But these Hondas are cheaper too than they were in the 80's. This 4 cylinder Accord will get up and do, a lot better than the base 6 cylinder Ford. Oh did I mention that the last Ford I had the engine caught on fire at under 4,000 miles, that was a mess 100 miles from home Friday 3PM on a Holiday weekend with outside temp of 103 degrees. That too may have something to do with my poor attitude. Had another one first day I got it, drove it out of state, sitting at a light adjusted the rearview mirror and cracked the windshield. Dealer said no way, took a look at it had a Ford Rep in at the same time they all took a look and replaced it. Odd inside sheet of class cracked right there, outside sheet perfect. And there was the one Mercury Sable I had that with about 11,000 miles and the brakes started sticking and the pedal would not come up. Was in Chicago that week and before I got back I had perfected the use of the left foot to lift the pedal whenever I braked. That's the same car that I was notified was in at the dealer, then they never called me to get it, recalled before I ever got it, about a 6 week delay there. It also had the solid light bar between the headlights and always had shorts in it, looked like a Jack-O-Lantern, had to contantly go out and mess with the connections.

Did I mention I like my Accord. Sorry, INeon for the flood there, but that is a touchy subject with me. I think I had one that did not have to do the rotors on, no that was a Lumina, sorry.
