I'm new to this forum... and to Mercedes Diesels in general... but not to cars.

Anyway, about 3 months ago I bought a '81 300TD, and I love the thing. Runs like a champ with 267K miles on it!

Yesterday, my glow plug light stopped comming on when I turned the key. I could still get the car to start, but it was tougher and a bit smoky. Once it is running for a minute everything seems to be prefectly normal.

Seems like there is something wrong with my glow plug system.

Is there a tutorial someplace that I could read to get me up to speed on how the glow plug system works, what to look for, and how to replace components?

Also, I've got access to a pretty good junk yard that generally has a couple of old Mercedes Diesels kicking around so I could pull a bunch of glow plugs from old engines... or should I just buy them new?
