Update. I gave a call to Russ before takeing the bad injector out. He said he'd bet that a pin under the spring got reversed. I checked it out and sure enough, that was it. The whole body was full of black goop---carbon etc. The needle was stuck and it took a bit of cleaning. I'd guess that with no resistance on the needle, the cylinder compression was pushing fuel and crap back up into the injector body. No wonder it was smoking.
Back together, everything is rosy. NO smoke and even combustion except for a lope that I think is valve adjustment. I probably could have gotten away with a cleaning and check of the old ones but I may get a bit more mileage with a better spray pattern and that will be worth something. Timing is in order also and with a tweak here and there it may surprise me.
Thanks for the comments.
