It always helps if you tell the list which model and the mileage.
Shade tree logic suggests that since the thermostat has no electrical connection (opens and closes based on coolant temperature ), it may be that the engine in not overheating, but your temperature gauge indicates that it is. The temperature gauge would be susceptible to failure to connect things correctly.
