The four pole temp sensor orientation is not critical, If it snaps all the way on it's good!
Steam all over the place on th other hand is NOT good. Go to your local parts house and get a block test kit and use as directed,If the test comes up positive for blown head gaskets you're in trouble! You might consider sending this job to a good shop as there is a lot at risk.
