These were hand built cars. Believe it or not, an alternative to the MB grill was an option as were the ridgelines running down the middle of flared fenders. I'll betcha the hood scoops were a custom option too. See the 540K thread and you will see two completely different 540k Spezial Cabriolets. The AZ auction car has a custom raked and sloped front grill unlike the stock MB grill. And it's got custom elephant ear rear fenders. Amazing by contemporary standards - imagine telling an auto company today that you want custom coachwork options to the original sheet metal.
