Even if the engines produce 50mpg that's equal to the max MPG of the TDI's today. You all don't know how close we were to having VW exit the diesel market. I haven't spoken to one of the German engineers here in the states for over a year but i guess they figured out a way to absorb the (then) $5000 per vehicle to make it cost effective in the marketplace and have to deal with the cooler exhaust temperatures with biodiesel and minimize clogging catalysts. There is also a supply issue with the diesels being dirty as they are and therefore the manufacturer can only have a certain average emissions dirtiness factor thereby limiting the number of TDI's reaching our shores.
