As long as you don't need a laptop (I'm assuming you don't since you currently have an iMac), I would buy one of the iMacs:

The base model starts at $999 and is packed to the gills with computing power. If you're a student you can get them for quite a bit cheaper, so maybe going with the next model up would be a better idea.
