A quick spritz with brake parts cleaner should reveal the engine number. Nothing in the area brake parts cleaner will hurt.

If you know it's the original engine you can ask an MB dealer to run a VMI which will list the original engine number. Or send me your VIN and I'll see what the EPC says.
