They were a surfer item here in the Left Coast also. Now everyone has them.

The "fad" has been going on for at least 4 or 5 years now. I remember when you couldn't find a pair of pink UGGs for life or money.
I've in in Santa Fe, NM twice in the past month. I saw a lot of tourists wearing the black tights, short mini combination and UGG boots that someone mentioned here. But only indoors, they are not really all THAT warm when it is 10 degrees outside and snow is falling everywhere!
