the slide hammer is to pull the hub from the trailing arm. I am sure that there are other ways to do it, but the tool rental is free.
I did purchase 3 tools for this job. the special socket, to remove the nut available
herefor $50. was $27,shipped last spring???
and a dial gauge,
here, and holder,
here. another $35.
then I also had to fab up a widget to pull it all together for assembly. 1/2 all thread and some washers and doo-hickeys that were lying around.
