w124 turbo switches off after a few minutes

After a few minutes of driving (5 - 10 minutes), the turbo on my 1992 300D 2.5 Turbo switches off, and the darling goes into dog mode. There is error code 5 when checking the EDS system. The 5 means vacuum transducer, or EGR system.

I went through the checks in the FSM (well worth the money BTW) and I got stumped. I was checking that vacuum gets through the vac transducer (the Star Trek looking black plastic thing near the coolant reserve tank (pic attached). Vacuum gets to it-20"Hg, but never gets through it. I took it off and checked it doesn't leak. It's like the vacuum is dissapearing. There is vacuum in the line if I exclude the Vac Transducer, and it doesn't leak. But if I put vacuum to it, none comes out any of the lines exiting it.

Doesn't make sense to me. I'd be happy to repalce it with the $148 replacement if it is what the problem is. But I'm not convinced it is the problem. Becuase it is mechanical, I'm thinking it will either work or not work - not work for 10 minutes and then quit. If I restart the car after the turbo has quit, it will work again for 10 minutes. So to me that sounds electronic, but I don't know what to do about it.

Any suggestions? Please..... it's driving me crazy.. been looking at the problem for months and I'm starting to think I must be stupid !
