It seems ironic. I've always tried to make sure I didn't do or say things to hurt my kids' self-esteem.

Mostly, I've told mine that nobody is good at everything, but everybody is good at something. Beyond that, I've just tried to encourage them to persue anything and everything that interests them.

The earlier they discover the thing they love the most, the longer they have to learn to do it. "That way," I tell them, "one day people will pay you to do things you'd do just for the love of it anyhow."
