I never noticed any difference when I put new insulation (the old was completely gone) in my W123 but I figure much of the sound escapes underneath.
My wife's '87 is another matter. The belly pans should trap some of the sound. I'm really interested is seeing how much quieter it gets when it finally warms up and dries off enough so I can install the insulation that currently is covering the spare bed. I'll probably even drag out my sound level meter and make some measurements.
