Self-employed management consultant and software developer. That means that after a 20 year career with a Fortune 500 company in Accounting, Sales, Sales Management, and General Management, there was a merger. They fired the top management at my plant. After 4 years managing a smaller privately held plant, I decided to start my own thing.
I taught myself database programming, and wrote a complete system that runs all aspects of a corrugated box plant. Sounds nice, but believe me it was years of 13 hour days and years of major travel to pull this off.
I have sold the system to around 15 plants. The system sells for around $40,000 installed, so I don't have to sell many per year. The monthly retainer provides a nice base income. I also do pure consulting within my industry. The wonderful thing about the Internet and broadband it that, as contrasted to 10 years ago, is that I can literally sit in my home office and be on any of my customer's systems in a matter of moments. This has really reduced the travel requirements.
