In New York the best jobs with the least long term responsibility are civil service. Police, Fire, Teacher, Corrections etc. They all have good pay and awesome benefits. A Suffolk County Police Officer with 5 years on the job is making 100K with incredible benefits and can retire after 20 years and get 50% of their last two years salary. The private sector just can't keep up with that.

I work for a building materials company running one of their showrooms. It is an excellent company to work for and the money and benefits are pretty good.

If you can get a higher education do it. Of course professional jobs are the best, but there are many others that require at least a bachelors to get your foot in the door.
