Benz doesn't put put a specific TSB for kicks...
They had oil leaks and their recommendation/cure was oil capacity reduction for that engine.
That is the message directly from Benz.
The head gasket is my own theory, and I just think the oil capacity just aggrevated the situation. The oil channels in the head are not a splash system. They are under pressure. [ except for drains]
