Great Proverb

Origin unknown

Quote:
Scenario A

A man is walking down a street and sees a threatening situation ahead. He is well versed in how to defend himself and continues forward and engages the threating situation head on, knowing that he will emerge victorious and will have vanquished his oppressor.

Scenario B

A man is walking down the street in a shady part of town and notices a threatening situation ahead. He is well versed in how to defend himself, and knows that if he were to engage the threat, he would emerge victorious and will have taught the would be oppressor a lesson. But he has learned from experience that this would be a pointless waste of his time and energy and the other party is not likely to learn the intended lesson, so he crosses the street to continue on his way, avoiding the need to defend himself, and depriving the foe of the satisfaction of the attack.

Scenario C

A truly skilled ninja, having learned well from a wise master, does not find himself on this street in the first place, and has no need to defend himself. He does not back down from a fight, because there is no fight.
