With ASR and proper snow tires, you can get through nearly anything one would expect to encounter on a paved road. Without ASR I'd think a 400E/E420 would be a handful, what with the torque available.

To date (knock on wood) I've never gotten stuck in any of my Benzes (and I've driven in truly horrible New England weather)
