I'm in the middle of the same on my 124.
If you can't get the key to turn to the accessory position... sufice it to say your screwed... but 'how screwed' may vary.
The easiest solution is to buy all new parts (on my 124 thats 4 parts - totaling approx $250) and start cutting out the old stuff.
I am going to try and save and gut the steering lock housing, but we'll see.
