In your car, the radio is broken up into seperate component, much like a home system.

Theres the headunit which is like a reciever that control the other components.

There is an amplifier thats seperate that produces the power for the speakers, and the reciever give it the information it need to run and make sound.

The tuner is also seperate, and the headunit controls that as well.

What you need to do is either run the hi low convertor off you back speakers, or pull apart the trunk lining, and connect the convertor to the amp. The headunit itself does not produce the power to drive the speakers, its an acutaly seperate physical entity.
