OK - you can call me dumb, but I just figured out the problem. The trans does indeed shift up to 4th, but it just SEEMS like it's still in 3rd. The little twin-cam M110 engine just loves to rev it's heart out and the transmission is designed to complement it.

As different from my 380SL as you could possibly get, but a very nice car to dive once you get used to it.
