Brewer gave me the tip on how to remove the speaker as the pre-step to cluster removal and I thought I should share it after having success (on 1989 300CE)

There's a little strip along the right side of the grill that comes off. Pry it off and there's two little screws under there. The grill comes right off then.

Bottom line, for clusters that won't move, I found pushing it from the speaker cavity to be the easiest.
