I assume we are talking about $2-3000 of work, correct? It really depends on the overall condition of the car/engine and your long term plans. I've recently spent more than that on my engine with 300+K miles, knowing I would not recover the money if I sold the car, but I don't plan on selling. The cheapest alternative might be a replacement used engine, but I don't trust used engines.
