I just happened to remember going with my mother (a very prim and proper Southern lady) to a furniture store once when I was very young, about 7 or 8. This store was spread throughout several buildings and at one point, we had to go out of one and across an alley to a second building.

The door was stuck as we tried to enter the second building and she twisted and pulled, and yanked on the door knob until finally it came out. Suddenly.

She went flying backwards across that alley and landed on her distinguished bottom and ended up sitting there looking very chagrinned amidst the old newspapers and trash.

I don't know which was bruised worse, Miss Betsey's bottom or her pride. It was one of the funniest things I ever saw. It looked like something right out of I Love Lucy!
