You can get a pretty good idea four ways that I know of:

1) Spins for more than 3 seconds after shutdown. My new one stops before you can say, "One- Mississippi."

2) Evidence of fluid leakage from clutch. (lots of sand stuck to clutch body)

3) Temp gauge deflection suddenly higher than normal at idle. (tipoff for me in my case).

4) This one I haven't observed but have heard about: After car has warmed up, shut it down and TAPE a fanblade to the radiator shroud with one piece of ducttape. Immediately restart. If fan rips tape loose, clutch is still fuctioning, if not, it's just freewheeling.
