i believe benz makes their own.
when they built their first, they used the fifties gm turbo hydormatic as a guide though and the earlier benz trannies are very similar to it in their action. ..but built on a lighter weight.
i uesd to have some early fifties caddies and i always thought that the benz automaitc acted a lot like the caddy trans and a few years ago i read a story in, i think, the star magazine that that is what they copied. well copied might be too strong.
the gm tranny was extremely robust. in the sixties and seventies they ran them on dragsters beefed up by b and m....behind blown chrysler hemis and such.
