The sunroof I'm not so sure about, but every few years the track rails should be lubed, there is a special Mercedes Benz paste that is recommended for this (not any old lube). Unfortunately Mercedes only sells it in HUGE tubs, pretty expensive. But Jonathan Hodgcock will sell you a small tin of it for less than $10, he is a forum member who owns Blue Ridge MB parts and shoot him an email. I believe Rusty Cullens of *************** will sell a small tin and George Murphy of MBC might, too. There are ways....
I have no clue about the smell of the gas, but wouold perliminarily urge you to check the gas lines and fuel pump in any event as part of the search.
The W124 vehicles are really great cars, unargualbly quality machines, long lasting and sturdy.
If I see ever see an Almandine red cabrio or a Sportline CE for sale, I am going to be in real trouble....
