I don’t think Mercedes ever used a GM automatic transmission in any models. A Borg Warner transmission was used until the 60s. In 1959 MB built there first in house automatic transmission with a fluid coupling, the transmission industry called it, 16 bolt pan MB. The aluminum fluid coupling would crack and leak from the bell housing.

From 1968 to 1983, 722.0, 1 and 2 (4bolt pan) 3 and 4 speed model transmissions were used. In 1981 722.3 (W4A040) and 722.4(W4A020) (6bolt pan) transmissions were introduced.

The 722.4 is a smaller version of the 722.3 transmission, just like a 904 Chrysler transmission is a smaller version of the 727 Chrysler transmissions, and were never used in any MB.
