Yes. It's why I've been attracted to the panpsychism of people like Whitehead. The concsciousness with which we are familiar must be a development of something which all matter has in a rudimentary form. Once matter reaches the level of complexity we have, self-consciousness occurs.
Is there any test we might imagine to prove whether the universe is conscious? I suppose it might be like one of our own liver cells trying to figure out the same thing about us.
