Who is "we" ? I'm not sure I get your point- that the people on the line are different than your wife? is she working on the line? is she the plant manager? Are you from cambodia or some other country and the people here in the usa are different?
Having spent more of the last two decades outside the usa than in it and coming from a smaller midwest background but then living in 6 states maybe I dont see what you see.
