Trucks are just as wasteful, though you see them being used more as work vehicles rather than personal transportation. Most SUV drivers use their vehicles for roles that a VW Rabbit or a Civic could do. Those cars get 2-3x the MPG of a typical SUV. The "sometimes" advantage of an SUV becomes an "all the time" habit.
