I think that thermocouples might be suitable sensors for such a job.
Hand held, battery powered thermometers are available that can handle two thermocouple sensors, typically with the ability to display the difference between the two temperatures being read as well as the two temperatures themselves. Other hand held units are available that also have datalogging capabilities and interfaces to allow transfer of the data to a personal computer.
Depending on the sensors, one might also need thermocouple extension leads (with the proper wire and connectors) in order to have the meter in a convenient location.
