Not everyone has an R12 recovery machine. I do; but if one does not, it can get really inconvenient (and pricey) having the R12 recovered and replaced. Plus it's never 100% weight, somehow, when done by others.
The trick that I related with the cold/heat, is done with the TXV in place.
