The fuel filler neck seal usually only goes bad if you spill biodiesel. If you clean up after a spill it usually will be okay, but it's defintely something to keep an eye one. If it does go bad it will start leaking into the trunk. The wagons actually have two filler neck seals. The neck goes through the body into the area where the first aid kit, and jack are, and then through the body again to go under the car to the tank.

I replaced all the lines on my wife's wagon and the supply line frome the tank to the hard line only had a hose clamp at the tank, unlike the photo that shows a crimped hose at the tank.
