Extraordinary measures to save someone's life, someone who abused their life, are a tough one for me, what with all sorts of relatively healthy people, children especially, whose health suffers for lack of far less complicated interventions.

How much does a transplant like that cost and who pays for it? And to give the guy a couple of years more life, often of medium quality?

OTOH, I've read of people who had a congenital condition be given a new lease on life, with many years of healthy productivity, because of a transplant.
