I just worked on this on my 1980 240D & 300D...

I canNOT believe it is located anywhere else other than where ours are... on the left side of the tranny where the shifter linkage runs and then attaches to a shaft that penetrates the tranny case. This switch fits over the shaft. The new OEM part I order failed to be properly adjustible so that you can start in "P" and "N" and turn on the backup lights in "R"... so out of frustration I drilled out the ~6 brads on my old switch, took it apart and cleaned it up, re-lubed it with a little white grease , and then put it back and held it together with the correct/obvious size screws and nuts so they would not interfere with any nearby rotating parts of the shifter linkage/lever.... and YES, it works like a charm now! So they are fixable.
It is an automatic is it not!?
