They are one in the same . A radial twisting force is resisted. The amount of resistance varies by design. Influenced by material thickness, Length, and hardness primarily. Leverage enters the equation as well when there is an offset like both ends of a sway bar. I suspect the first usage on cars was when independent front suspension came along to replace the solid front axel.
