you don't need to be able to start it to get the vac. pump to work. You just need to put power to the car (e.g. hook up a live battery and make sure fuses are intact)...as stated these don't work like a 123..and if it did, a mityvac (as a substitute for the engine vac pump) would sort you out anyway assuming there's not a massive leak back there.
