lights on the selector gear do not work. solution please.

also auto key lights up when pointed to interior mirror but dosnt seem to connect to sensor to open the doors. have changed battery but nothing. mercedes says it has to be re-programmed at a cost of £200. is there nothing cheaper I can do.
