I have a 99 and the dealership did it free of charge. I asked them to enable both the harness and the indicator light, but only the harness worked.
When I took it in for service sometime later, I noted the situation, and when I got it back, they had said that there was no indicator light on the 99 model either. Oh well.
They should not have charged you in the first place, and they should have let you know about the fact that they are enabled seperately (if you have an indicator light). I have heard that the green glow from the indicator light is annoying for many owners, and that is why MB chose to make them enable separately...
