Depends...I am guessing this is an M103 vs. an M104? Typical head gasket failure on an M103 will also breach the cooling system when it can't go any longer...so oil in the coolant tank is the first symptom to look for, not just the seepage around the head. High operating temps would surely follow.

M104s usually just leak profusely. Mine was leaving a quart on the ground everywhere it was parked...a ruptured heater hose actually prompted the work though.

Can't comment on what to replace on the M103, except I agree with head reconditioning involving valve stem guides and seals. Good time to replace seals and gaskets in general on parts that are dismantled during disassembly.
