For anyone else with this problem: You need to remove the whole steering lock from the car with the tumbler attached. Then look for the hole in the _side_ of the tumbler cylinder. With the key in the 1 position push a heavy wire into that hole and towards the left (counterclockwise on the cylinder). That will depress a spring loaded tab and allow the tumbler to be removed
. The CD manual I had did not show this variation.
