The TV schmucks focus more on what I call "graphical horror" - things you can see.
The bridge disaster in Minnesota can easily be brought to the screen with all the detail they choose. Everything is more or less in plain sight.
The miners are way down deep - out of sight - about all you can get a camera on is the front of the mine. No real excitemnt from a broadcast journalists perspective.
Kinda reminds me of the Don Henley song "'see the bubble-headed bleached blond, she comes on at 5 - she can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye".
