Odd side note - my Subarmine has a tube that goes from the outside of the hull to the inside (I think there are 2 acutally) each are 1 or 2 inches in diameter, with 2 valve isolation from the sea pressure...

the rumor was that these tubes were only there to put soup or air down in case the sub was stranded on the bottom...

Often, during boring watches, we'd hold a bowl up to that tube and ask aloud for more soup...

Did not mean to make light of the miner's situation, the sub had these things designed in, why not the mines ?

So, what can you do with a 2" hole ? pass air in and out ? food/water tube ?
